This course teaches participants how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure, and what to do if exposed to infectious material. This course helps to meet requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. After taking this course, participants should talk with their employer about their workplace’s specific policies and procedures. Classroom and web-based training options are available.

Learning Objectives
- Define bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
- Understand how infections can be spread from one person to another.
- List the bloodborne pathogens that are of most concern in the workplace.
- Understand the responsibilities both the employer and the employee have in protecting the employee from exposure to bloodborne pathogens on the job.
- Describe the contents of an exposure control plan and understand the importance of being familiar with the exposure control plan at their place of employment.
- Describe the difference between engineering controls and work practice controls and give examples of each.
- Explain what it means to take standard precautions and describe examples of practices that are included as part of standard precautions.
- Describe when and how to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
- Demonstrate proper technique for removing disposable gloves.
- Describe when and how to wash their hands to limit the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
- Describe proper technique for cleaning equipment and surfaces soiled with blood or other potentially infectious materials, and for disposing of contaminated materials.
- Describe what to do if an exposure incident occurs.
- Demonstrate the correct response to an incident involving bloodborne pathogens.

To receive a completion certificate, participants must attend the entire Bloodborne Pathogens Training classroom course, or if enrolled in an online option, successfully complete the online course.
